How To Buy A Good Baby Crib

by Sheri Johnson

There are so many different price ranges, types and styles of baby cribs available today that it can be quite mind boggling. The first questions that should pop into your head are what you should be looking for and where to start. Crib safety should be the most important consideration for the babys sake. This will include crib placement as well as several other safety related aspects. This is a very important consideration when looking at meeting the needs of your little one. No matter if you are building your own or buying one, there are a few tips that you should use when choosing a crib.

Once again, safety is the most important factor when buying a crib. There are many safety standards that have been put into place by the government as to the standards a baby crib must meet. If you are purchasing or will be getting a used baby crib then you should check it out according to these standards. Any issues should be corrected before using the crib. One of the most important of these issues is to check for loose, broken or missing slats. Any that are loose should be properly secured, and any that are broken or missing should be replaced. You should also check out all the hardware to make sure it is properly tightened as well. Decorative cutouts are pretty to look at but very dangerous for a little one. They could get stuck and hurt or worse. Avoid beds with such cutouts.

Crib sides are another very important safety feature that must be looked at when getting that crib. The slats on the crib sides should be no further apart than 2-1/8 and corner post no higher than 1/16 above the head or footboard. You dont want your baby getting caught between the slats. Be sure that all posts are secure and free of any hazards. Most cribs come with either one or both sides that can be lowered to attend to baby needs and cleaning. Baby cribs have different mechanisms that are used to lower the side. These should be checked for proper working order. On used beds many times these mechanisms can have problems which can allow the sides to fall if not latched properly. The same holds true for new beds as latches can possibly be defective.

One other very important issue to check into is the mattress for your baby crib. You should make sure that the mattress fits the baby crib in a snug fashion. It doesnt matter if you are buying a new bed that comes with its own or if you are purchasing a mattress for a crib you bought without one. It is possible for a little one to become caught between a mattress and the slats or posts if a mattress doesnt fit the crib properly.

Even though baby cribs come in different styles and sizes, you can be sure that they have the safest area possible to sleep by doing safety checks. Always thoroughly check out the crib from top to bottom to keep them safe. Babies depend on us to keep them safe, healthy and happy so dont forget to do your safety checks

A Few Tips for Baby Nursery Safety

by Dennis Kiefer

A child is protected, safe and secure in a nursery. Parents watch over them and ensure that they cannot touch things that may be harmful as they grow.

However, it is critical that additional steps are taken to make sure the childs safety is properly met. Often, a parent will not notice some of the common safety problems prevalent to a nursery. As such, here is a brief guide to a number of steps that can be taken to increase nursery safety.

Of course, a nursery decoration can add to the visual look of the nursery. But, it would be na"ve to think that all nursery decorations are completely safe. Far too often, a nursery decoration can present a choking hazard. That means you must keep the nursery free of any baby nursery dcor that can get loose and be easily swallowed.

Watch for gaps in decorations that will allow your baby's hands to become entangled and possibly cause suffocation. Taking the time to test them all with your own fingers will be sufficient. If you find anything questionable then bet rid of it.

A device that significantly contributes to your baby's safety is a sleep positioner commonly called a wedge. They can prevent your baby from rolling around. This makes your rest easier. Make sure you inspect it before using though.

We all know style is important but a "look" just doesn't account for safety. That's why prior close inspection of any decorations is necessary to prevent injuries or death. If in doubt then throw it out.

Buying a high quality audio or video monitor will help dramatically with your peace of mind as you sleep or go about your daily routine. You know you can quickly respond to anything that might be causing danger to your baby.

Once again, there really should not be a limit on the steps you take for ensuring your baby remains safe and sound in a nursery. Often, it is only a few simple steps that can increase safety. Taking these steps can take a great deal of worry off your shoulders.
