Maybe Baby? Finding the Right Nutrition for Your Pregnancy

Newspapers have been writing a lot about fertility and the fact that more and more women are making a choice to start a family in their 30's or 40's. Girls these days are highly likely to have a high flying career and be considering town trips, shoe shopping and sports autos, and a lot less about Mothercare, changing nappies, and pushing carts.

The average age for giving birth in the UK is going up about two months every year. The average age in 2007 was 29.3 years compared with 28.6 years in 2001. Statistics show that the average lady under thirty will get pregnant within the first 6 months and those in their early thirty's may take up to and longer than nine months. From 35 onwards it might take one year.

Some girls are spending plenty of cash attempting to increase their possibilities of conceiving naturally, but this may be a needless cost. Lord Robert Winston, pioneer of IVF treatment, told the Daily Mail that ladies who freeze their eggs to obstruct parenthood are being given false hopes by fertility clinics. He is going on to say that this does not in any way guarantee that a women will become pregnant or go on to have a healthy baby.

So without ditching the thrilling lifestyle what can you do to help turbo-charge your wellbeing for that 'maybe baby' stage? Being healthy is far easier than you might think. Here are a few tips

For her :

Iron

Most ladies recognize iron as a very important mineral for good health. Despite this data, iron deficiency is regarded the commonest nutritive deficiency and the most affected group are ladies of child bearing age. Studies have shown that even delicate deficiencies of iron are linked to reduced fertility. It would seem that a deficiency of iron may play a part in ovulatory dysfunction. Take daily Iron supplements ( look for non-constipating form )

Essential trans acids

The force on girls to stay slim has lead to many women adopting awfully fat free diets. Sadly, this pattern of eating is related to a decline in fertility. The necessary trans acids ( found in nuts, seeds and oily fish ) have many functions across the body, including balancing the hormones concerned in fertility. Try Omega 3-6-9 capsules with a mix of prime quality fish, flax and borage oil.

Multivitamin and mineral formula

A multivitamin and mineral formula has for some time been regarded as a measure for general wellness and as health insurance. Studies now suggest that a multivitamin formula could also be of use for maintaining fertility in women. Studies in the latter 90s proved that ladies who constantly took a multivitamin formula, were less sure to be infertile due to ovulatory failure than people who didn't. Similarly, the more frequent and regular the supplements were taken, the better the results .

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 ( sometimes called the sunshine vitamin ) could augment the fertility of girls afflicted with ovulation Problems. One in 5 women suffer with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome ( PCOS ) and can have a lesser chance of conception at a later age. Researchers at Yale school college of medication ( 2008 ) concluded ladies with ovulation problems or PCOS were much more sure to be low in vitamin D.

For him :

Your other half should be thinking along the same lines as you when it comes to living healthily. Sperm count and motility plays a particularly important part in the middle of trying to become pregnant. Why do all of the hard work when your partner plays an equal part in the process of conception? Recent figures ( from Norwich Union health-care in 2005 ) show that 2.5 million men have barrenness in the UK. Male infertility may account for up to a third of issues with conception so it is important that your man takes similar steps to you to keep himself and his sperm in tip top health.

Zinc

Zinc is obviously one of the most vital nutriments required for fertility, particularly for men. Studies show that a low zinc intake corresponds with a low sperm count and poor sperm motility.

Vitamin C

As an antioxidant, vitamin C is critical for good health. For men, this nutrient plays a specific role in augmenting fertility. Research has shown that vitamin C may help to reduce the clumping together of sperm and therefore enhances sperm motility. Additionally, vitamin C usually reinforces sperm quality and protects the DNA contained inside it from damage.

Have Baby Products, Will Travel

Welcome to parenthood! We hope you like it because you'll be doing it for the rest of your life. As with anything else in life though, it's important to get off on the right foot. Basically you want to do the best you can for your new addition. Your choice in baby products will let the little one know that you care about them and keep them happy during their developmental years. All of this goes away in the teen years, so make them happy while you can.

Strollers are a must. You won't find a supped up stroller out there with a speedometer and heads up display so baby has a clear shot with its missiles but there are options. Light strollers vs. heavy strollers are the main concern. Here's what you need to look at: lifestyle. Are you a take baby around the block kind of person or do you plan on drives to the park or beach? Light strollers are great because they're smaller and store in the house easier, and let's face it; you're going to have plenty of clutter in your future. A lot of the heavy strollers are actually car seats as well, that halves the amount of space needed in a way and the extra storage space is nice for juice and toys during extended time away from the house.

Believe it or not, of all the baby products out there, diapers are the most controversial. The two choices are cloth and disposable. Cloth diapers are better for the environment and don't fill up landfills. But they're cloth, so you have to wash them. Disposable diapers are disposable, oddly enough, and for your baby and you it's all fire, change and forget. Whatever your choice is remember two things: makes sure the diaper is snug but not too tight and that if the diaper has a 25 lbs limit that is the BABY'S weight limit, not the amount the diaper will hold.

In your quest for the perfect baby products you're going to encounter many, many play pens. The natural inclination is to think you can just get one later, when baby is older. This is not a good idea. A play pen is your baby's protection when you are not holding them. It's a safe environment for them to learn to roll over and to stand up. As infants, it's a place where you know no one will step on them. Don't be afraid to get one right off.

Beds are imperative, unless the idea of your little addition sleeping on a straw mat appeals to you. I'll bet it doesn't. Some parents will buy a play pen and call it quits there. That's a bad idea because you want to establish early on that baby sleeps "here" and plays "there". You are better off starting with a bassinet working up to a baby bed, but definitely work into a bed. Also be mindful of inspecting any antiques that are passed down for possible safety issues. Just because four generations of Lipwickis slept in that bed doesn't mean they didn't get lucky and survive the experience. Padding can be added to make these valuable heirlooms safer.

What's a bed without blankets? In fact having a baby without blankets is like having submarine with a screen door: completely useless and a little insane. Blankets provide comfort and shade for your baby. Remember to use heavier blankets in the winter months or in colder climes and lighter blankets in the summer for some shade when needed. Keep lots of blankets on hand too! Of all the baby products on the market today, blankets are still the most versatile items in your parental arsenal. They're also the most likely to get up-chucked on, so extras will always be needed.

Bottles are very important. Even if the plan is to go "au natural" you will still need bottles for juice and the like. Mom is not a slurp-ee machine you know. In all truthfulness, design doesn't matter too much. When buying bottles, look into the nipple quality and never put the nipples in the dish washer. The synthetic "rubber" the nipple is made out of can become dry and brittle with prolonged exposure to heat.

Baby products have been developed enough over the years that there are probably more choices than what is healthy for a new parent's sanity. The best bet is to look at your own lifestyle and go from there. If you travel a lot with baby, think pockets. If you're homebodies, then think light. Either way, it's a learning experience and not one you'll ever get back when it's done, so enjoy!
