Children’s Health Advise - Appendicitis And Other Abdominal Pains

Stomachaches in children happen quite frequently for various reasons, and the frequency increases as soon as they start going to school. When playing with other kids, your child is susceptible to various types of bacteria as well as viruses which can be easily passed on from student to student.

The most common cause of stomach pains are normally virus-related, bacteria as well. How do you tell the difference between the two? It's pretty difficult really unless you take your kid to the doctor and have a blood sample taken.

They way you can differentiate between illnesses caused by viruses and the ones that stem from bacteria is usually the length of infection. With viral-based infections, it doesn't last very long and is over before you know it. Bacteria related symptoms can last up to 7 days, depending on it's severity. The symptoms are usually a mild fever, dehydration (purging of solids and liquids) and of course acute abdominal pains. Normally with viruses, there is nothing much you can do except have your kid drink lots of water and wait for symptoms to wear off.

Some foods can also cause your child to get tummy pains. Kids who are allergic to dairy may suffer from skin rashes, stomach cramps and diarrhea from merely having some ice-cream.

These allergies can be quite dangerous depending on how the child reacts to it but in general, most of the side effects only last a day as long as no further diary food is consumed.

Of all the different types of stomach pains, appendicitis would have to be the worst of all. The pain can be excruciating and appendicitis is more common amongst children than adults. Appendicitis may require surgery to get the appendix removed if the pain persists.

Some kids for their own reasons will not tell you that they have stomach pains and will express it by crying or through the loss of appetite. It is important you see these signs and act accordingly. If the symptoms still remain after a few days, do not wait and rush your kid to the doctor for further examination.

As a parent, there is only so much you can do to protect your child's health. Educating your children on hygiene and cleanliness is vital. When these illnesses occur there is nothing much you can do (besides visiting the doctor) except to comfort your child and make sure he or she gets plenty of rest.
