Crib Bedding and Baby Precautions

Now that you've got a baby crib, the next thing you'll need to get is a crib set. Most baby crib bedding sets consist of several items, but some of them may actually be harmful to your baby. To be honest, the only thing you really need is a couple of crib sheets, because modern crib safety standards recommend keeping cribs free of all soft bedding. If you want to get the most for your money, skip the crib set and the useless (but cute) accessories. Instead, invest in a half dozen comfortable, high quality crib sheets.
Suffocation is a serious concern for babies, so remove all soft bedding, including bumper pads and blankets. If you're worried about baby getting to cold, put on some warm pajamas or a swaddling blankets instead. Baby sacks are like sleeping bags for babies, except that they are worn like a vest, with head and arm holes. Swaddling blankets are now much more than just a square of cloth. There are various styles that come with fasteners so you can make sure the blanket fits snugly and won't come loose. Swaddling helps some babies sleep better, but others find it constricting and do not like it. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. However, when baby goes in the crib, be sure to take the blanket off.
You might be considering a sleep wedge for your baby. After all, it's supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS, something most new parents worry about. But young babies are not able to roll over, so if you put them to bed on their backs, they'll stay on their backs. And by the time they are able to roll onto their tummies, SIDS is no longer such a serious concern. Since foam is a soft material, these wedges could do more harm than good, by contributing to suffocation risks.
Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. While these add tremendously to the look of the nursery, they are quite honestly not needed.
It is understandable, however, that you might want a bedding set to complete the look of your baby's room. If so, just get neutral baby bedding like a Hot Cocoa baby bedding set. It's much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
