When one thinks of toys, the mind usually springs to children playing. But it is more than familiar to see adults and some animals playing with toys. Some items are made to be used as toys, but there are many items that have been created for different reasons that also get used as toys.
A young child might "fly" a normal everyday item around pretending it's an aeroplane, or you may well see a dog or cat playing with a pine cone or something, batting it around and throwing it up in the air. Some toys however that have been made as toys, are not made to be played with, but designed to be collectors items.
The toy itself dates back to pre-historic periods, the early children of mankind picking up sticks shaped like men, and dolls of things like babies or animals are regularly found on archaeological sites. It is understood that the word "toy" was introduced to the language in the 14th century, but we cannot be entirely sure.
Toys, and general play, are very important in terms of growing up and learning more about the world. Children use toys and play to discover their identity, to aid their body's development, explore relationships, and practise the adult skills all of us come to need.
Adults are known to use toys and play to form and strengthen social relationships, to remember things from their youth, exercise their brains and bodies, explore practise skills, and decorate their living quarters. Toys are for more than just entertainment, have a profound influence on many aspects of the turnout of our lives.
Child Development: Play and toys serve several purposes in animals and humans. The main reason they're so important is that they allow us to learn through play, which is the most effective way for people to learn because they are genuinely enjoying the learning process. Toys helps us to acquire the mental and physical skills that we need in our adult lives and stimulate our minds to think.
Possibly on of the simplest toys a child can have is a set of wooden blocks. They may be the simplest, but they are one of the most effective toys for developing children's mind power. Research shows that a simple set of wooden block can help children's basic maths and science skills and their hand-eye co-ordination. Other toys such as marbles and balls serve similar purposes.
Clay modelling toys such as play-dough have been proven to have a profound effect on the development of a child in a mental, physical, social and emotional sense.
